Rattenberg is not only Austria’s smallest city in terms of area, but also one of the best-preserved medieval towns we have to offer in Tyrol. Built directly between rocks and the Inn river, it was first documented in 1254. Rattenberg thus made a name for itself as a border and trading town, as customs duties were levied on both land and river transport, and business thrived. Thus, Rattenberg was a flourishing city, with an upper and lower castle, a nail forge, a bathhouse, a court, shops, a former princely trading house, Schaudereck, the birthplace of St. Notburga, and much more. <\/p>\n

The city view from above is particularly worth seeing. You can comfortably ascend part of the way by elevator before we cover the last section on foot. Once at the top, we have a fantastic view of the Inn-Salzach city and can see the trough and trench roofs of the historic town. Also located up here is the still-preserved castle frieze, where the former Chancellor Biener was executed. An interesting story with great depth awaits you up here. <\/p>\n

Also particularly beautiful is the Parish Church of St. Virgil, a two-aisled hall church designed for the social separation of townspeople and miners, which we will also visit. The former princely trading house with the coat of arms fresco of Leopold V has also been preserved to this day. <\/p>\n

Not to be forgotten are the beautiful Malerwinkel (Painter’s Corner) and the famous statue of the natural medicine specialist Paracelsus. <\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP: Afterwards, relax in one of the traditional caf\u00e9s such as Hacker, Freudenschuss, or the rustic Brauhaus. Here you can round off your day after a city tour in comfort, with the aroma of coffee or freshly baked goods in the air. In winter, the unique apple tarte flamb\u00e9e is also a must-try. This makes a visit to Rattenberg an all-round successful experience.<\/p>\n
