It can be seen from afar, Freundsberg Castle or Frundsberg, as it was formerly called. Built in 1170 by the Lords of Freundsberg, and still a landmark of Schwaz today. <\/p>\n

Schwaz, located in the middle between Innsbruck and Kufstein, is an integral part of Tyrolean history. In the late Middle Ages, after Vienna, it was the most populous city in the Habsburg Empire. The settlement with weekly market privileges counted a whopping 20,000 inhabitants, so that even the parish church, to our Dear Lady, became too small at the end of the 15th century. The existing building had to be expanded into a double church with four naves and two choirs. Numerous miners had to find space in the church and the bourgeoisie also wanted to attend the service. <\/p>\n

The heyday of silver and copper mining can be dated between 1450 and 1550. The shiny rock was discovered by chance. <\/p>\n

Above Schwaz, in the area of Kogelmoos, the maid Gertraud Kandlerin looked after alpine cattle. In fierce anger, the herd bull stirred up the grassy ground with its horns and hooves and exposed colored, shiny stones. The maid carried these stones home, where they were soon recognized as ore. <\/p>\n

The tunnels “Kandlerin” and “St. Jakob am Stier” are among the oldest on the “Falkenstein” and the bull can still be found in the coat of arms of the municipality of Gallzein. <\/p>\n
