The southern side of the Alps is characterized by a milder climate. This is precisely why it is predestined for wine and apple cultivation. In contrast, schnapps has always been distilled on the northern side of the Alps, and already in the time of Maria Theresa, in the 18th century, the “Wilsch\u00f6nau” farmers were granted the sole right to distill Krautinger, the turnip schnapps, so that the inhabitants of the high valley could trade with it and survive better. From this perspective, the southern side of the Alps was and still is agriculturally favored.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the Inn Valley in North Tyrol, the route leads to Innsbruck, past the provincial capital, into the Wipp Valley, which runs south. The Romans already knew how to utilize the lowest Alpine pass at 1,370 m above sea level. Merano, the Pearl of the Alps or the Nice of Tyrol, is how the city on the southern side of the Alps is still affectionately called. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Precisely because of its Mediterranean influence, the mountain-ringed city of Merano is particularly popular. Palms grow in the valley, and at 3,000 m, snow often still lies. Incredible contrasts and crystal-clear water flow through the famous Alpine river, the Passer. <\/p>\n

Attached is the route from Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass, 1,374 m above sea level, continuing past Sterzing to Neustift Monastery (stop as described above), then on to Bolzano, past the magnificent Sigmundskron Castle complex, to Merano. City tour and free time afterwards. In good weather, the return journey via the Jaufen Pass, 2,094 m, is recommended. A wonderfully beautiful mountain scenery awaits you with a photo stop at the pass summit.<\/p>\n
