S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe, an African island nation near the equator, is part of a volcanic chain with remarkable rock and coral formations, rainforests and beaches. On the largest island, S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9, lies the Lagoa Azul or Blue Lagoon. The \u00d4bo Natural Park, a biodiverse jungle reserve, covers a large part of S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and is known for Pico C\u00e3o Grande, a skyscraper-like volcanic rock. <\/p>\n

The 13-day trip to S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 with my 7-member adventure travel group was simply unique. “A guade Zeit mit supa Leid” in short, but what we all experienced would probably go beyond the scope of the blog. <\/p>\n

It started in Vienna,<\/strong> from where we flew to Lisbon<\/strong>. The next day we continued via Accra<\/strong> (Ghana)<\/strong> for a stopover, where guests got off, others got on and the plane was refueled. An hour later we were back in the air to our final destination S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Once there, we were picked up by a small bus and went directly to the first lodge called Mucumbli Eco-Lodge<\/a> which is run by the Italian Titziano. (highly recommended \u2013 thank you to Titziano for the very nice welcome) <\/p>\n

From there, the first hike started the next day. We were led by a licensed<\/strong> guide<\/strong> from S\u00e3o<\/strong> Tom\u00e9<\/strong> named Agostinho<\/strong> Fernandes<\/strong> and our driver<\/strong> Ito Barros<\/strong>, who brought us safely over hill and dale (in the truest sense of the word). The road conditions were one of the great adventures on the tropical island. <\/p>\n

Then we drove on to the first cocoa plantation<\/strong>,<\/strong> through unique<\/strong> nature<\/strong>, high<\/strong> humidity<\/strong> and grandiose<\/strong> views<\/strong> of the sea and jungle forests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For 6 days we were able to explore the north side of the island of S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9<\/strong>. From cocoa and coffee plantations to hidden waterfalls<\/strong> to water-filled tunnels that we waded through with flashlight (thanks Andy for your ultra-bright professional light)<\/strong> and water shoes. <\/p>\n

A highlight of these water-filled tunnels\/levadas<\/strong> were the bats living there, which we were able to admire live. Also the Angolar waterfall<\/strong> reached there at the end is worth a sin. We didn’t miss the opportunity to dive in and enjoy the wonderfully refreshing water. What an adventure \u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another tour highlight was the Santa F\u00e9 waterfall<\/strong> (Cascata fundo do morcego) where the way there turned out to be a true jungle expedition<\/strong>. Thank God our guide always had his machete<\/strong> with him to be able to cut the path free in some places. <\/p>\n

Arriving at the bottom, the entrance to a waterfall awaited us, but now it was only possible to continue swimming<\/strong> to get to the inside of the cave<\/strong>. Another day we drove along the west coast south to Santa Catarina.<\/strong> Santa Catarina was named after a small river<\/strong> that flows near the village. However, the road ends there after the village in a southerly direction. The bridge was washed away<\/strong> years ago<\/b> and never rebuilt by the state. <\/p>\n

On the village street there are free-roaming<\/b> pigs<\/strong>, goats<\/strong> and chickens<\/strong>. You see people of all ages. The place is located directly on the sea<\/strong>, so the inhabitants eat<\/strong> a lot of fresh<\/strong> fish<\/strong>. However, it should be said that Santa Catarina is one of the poorest<\/strong> villages<\/strong> on the island. People live in adverse<\/strong> conditions<\/strong> in<\/strong> barracks<\/strong> and enjoy virtually no<\/strong> medical<\/strong> care<\/strong>. That is the downside and must also be mentioned. <\/p>\n

After these eventful days, we made our way to the south<\/strong>. The south of the island goes hand in hand with a 4-hour drive. Numerous<\/strong> stops<\/strong> with wonderful views<\/strong> awaited us. <\/p>\n

A highlight was without a doubt the stop at the top chef<\/strong> Jo\u00e3o<\/strong> Carlos Silva<\/strong> who 20<\/strong> years ago<\/strong> opened<\/strong> a restaurant<\/strong> on the island off the West African coast. The Portuguese TV chef is particularly picky<\/strong> when it comes to ingredients. And we got to taste<\/strong>, smell<\/strong> and feel<\/strong> this. A culinary experience of a very special kind. We were all very enthusiastic about such great palate pleasure! <\/p>\n

The Pico C\u00e3o Grande (Portuguese for “peak\/summit of the Great Dog<\/strong>“) is a landscape-defining needle-shaped volcanic<\/strong>–<\/strong>plug<\/strong> in S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe, in the Cau\u00e9 district of S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 in the Parque Natural Ob\u00f4 de S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9. <\/p>\n

Its summit is 663<\/strong> m<\/strong> high and it rises about 370 m from the surrounding terrain. The plug was formed by hardening magma<\/strong> in the vent of an active volcano<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

After this highlight we went to our accommodation Hotel Praia Inhame<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the south of the island. Here’s what awaited us: <\/p>\n

\u2713 a dream beach<\/strong> that belongs to the bungalow complex. Depending on the season, turtles<\/strong> come to the beach to lay their eggs<\/strong>. We were very lucky to be present at two releases of the little baby turtles. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\u2713 Tropical<\/strong> water temperatures<\/strong> felt like lying in a warm bathtub made our hearts beat faster. Trees and palms that grow from the beach into the sea, as kitschy as it could be. Lambada Feeling and Rum Coconut\u2026with powdered sugar beaches. <\/p>\n

\u2713 A very good meal and, as could not be otherwise, there was always a freshly squeezed juice from fruits<\/strong> on site for breakfast. In the evening there was often fresh fish and once a buffet to choose from. <\/p>\n

The day after arrival, the optional excursion took us by boat<\/strong> through a mangrove<\/strong> forest<\/strong>. Fascinating stilt<\/strong>–roots<\/strong> with crabs<\/strong> and mudskippers<\/strong> on it and an interesting bird world<\/strong> made us melt away. It was an exciting and informative tour\u2026 <\/p>\n

The last included excursion and also the conclusion of our trip led us to the small neighboring island Ilh\u00e9u<\/strong> das<\/strong> Rolas<\/strong>. It is not only a geographical<\/strong> highlight<\/strong>, but also a cultural and natural paradise<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

This small island can only be reached by<\/strong> boat<\/strong> from<\/strong> S\u00e3o<\/strong> Tom\u00e9<\/strong> and offers a variety of activities for adventurers and those seeking relaxation. From crossing<\/strong> the equator<\/strong> to hikes through dense forests \u2013 Ilh\u00e9u das Rolas has something to offer for everyone. <\/p>\n

We were able to see the beauty<\/strong> of<\/strong> the island<\/strong> for ourselves and enjoyed a wonderful hike<\/strong> across the island with many views of the breathtaking<\/strong> coastline<\/strong>. With a refreshing swim in the sea and a late lunch<\/strong> we could end the last day really nicely before taking the boat back. <\/p>\n

All in all, a unique journey, which, however, requires a spirit of discovery from the travelers<\/strong>. High humidity, insects and acclimatization challenged us especially in the first days. Also a little stomach upset kept us all on our toes for a few days. <\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it is not<\/strong> an everyday<\/strong> destination<\/strong> with many aha moments and new discoveries. In any case, we were all thrilled and I personally can warmly recommend the trip for adventurous guests.<\/strong> <\/p>\n
