Around 1440, the Borromeo family acquired two castles on Lago Maggiore and were elevated to the rank of counts in 1445. Between 1447 and 1450, they supported the Sforza family in their struggle for the succession of the Visconti. For centuries, they exercised Milanese suzerainty over Lago Maggiore, where they still own significant castles today. The Borromeo family had been Counts of Arona since 1445, the head of the family Marchese di Angera since 1623, and Principe di Angera since 1916. <\/p>\n

Day 1 Arrival: <\/strong>Early in the morning, we set off to pick up all our guests. We headed straight over the Brenner Pass, where we picked up two more ladies from South Tyrol, before continuing to Lake Garda, to Peschiera<\/strong>. In the east of the gentle, almost completely flat meadow landscape of the southern shore lies the bustling Peschiera<\/strong> del Garda<\/strong>. Its location on the Mincio<\/strong> \u2013 the only outflow of Lake Garda \u2013 gave the town of 9,000 inhabitants particular strategic importance early on. <\/p>\n

Peschiera’s<\/strong> old town<\/strong>, completely surrounded by canals<\/strong>, is located within a mighty<\/strong>, beautifully<\/strong> overgrown fortress<\/strong>. While strolling<\/strong> through the narrow alleys<\/strong> \u2013 not dominated by tourism \u2013 one can find many nice shops<\/strong> and small bars<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The star-shaped fortress of Peschiera, completely surrounded by water, with its 2,250 meters of walls, is the largest military installation on Lake Garda. Today, it is largely overgrown with trees and bushes and partly somewhat dilapidated. However, its core still belongs to the army, but can be visited by prior arrangement. <\/p>\n

True to our word, all guests found the small town<\/strong> wonderful<\/strong>, and so we had a great first<\/strong> stop<\/strong> in Bella Italia.<\/p>\n

We continued to San Martino della Battaglia<\/strong>. The Torre di San Martino della Battaglia<\/g> is a memorial<\/g> commemorating the Battle<\/g> of Solferino<\/g> in 1859<\/g>. In the adjacent<\/strong> ossuary<\/strong>, the remains<\/strong> of thousands of fallen<\/strong> soldiers<\/strong> are preserved. <\/p>\n

Following this visit, we proceeded to our final destination, Lago Maggiore, to the beautiful Hotel Il Chiostro in Verbania. Hotel Il Chiostro in Verbania is a charming renovated monastery located in the old town of Intra, directly on the shores of Lago Maggiore. We enjoyed a pleasant dinner before we all went to bed, tired. <\/p>\n

The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway<\/strong> is a narrow-gauge railway<\/strong> connecting the Swiss city<\/strong> of Locarno<\/strong> with the Italian city of Domodossola<\/strong>. The approximately 50<\/strong> kilometer<\/strong> long route leads through the Centovalli<\/strong> and Valle<\/strong> Vigezzo<\/strong>, known for their spectacular<\/strong> nature<\/strong> and breathtaking<\/strong> panoramas<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Early in the morning, we set off again for Domodossola<\/strong>. There we had a short stop before continuing by panoramic train<\/strong> to Locarno<\/strong>. Fantastically beautiful views<\/strong> awaited us, and I hopped from one window<\/strong> to another to allow a guest to see the most beautiful<\/strong> views<\/strong>. \ud83d\ude42<\/span> Only the best for our guests! <\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n

From Baveno<\/strong>, we traveled by boat<\/strong> with Olga<\/strong>, our local guide<\/strong>, to the island of Isola Bella<\/strong>. Upon arrival, we first had to wait until we could enter the Palazzo Borromeo<\/strong>. The tour with Olga<\/strong> was fantastico<\/strong>, and we learned a great deal about the creation of this wonderful Baroque<\/strong> ensemble<\/strong>. Not only is the Palazzo<\/strong> uniquely beautiful, but the Baroque<\/strong> garden complex<\/strong> is also a feast for the eyes. <\/p>\n

“As fantastic and wonderful as Isola Bella may be, it is even more beautiful than one can imagine.”<\/strong> Charles Dickens, the famous English writer, said this about Isola Bella, the second of the Borromean Islands, in 1844.<\/p>\n

The Isola Bella<\/strong> is located on the northwestern side of the lake and consists entirely of a garden that corresponds to the Italian style of Palazzo Borromeo. In 1632, Count Vitaliano Borromeo began the construction of the monumental Baroque palace and the majestically terraced gardens, which still document the pomp of an era today. Visitors are overwhelmed by the splendor of the tapestries, paintings, furniture, and statues that adorn the palace. At the end of the visit, one has access to the gardens and can fully enjoy a charming stroll among exotic plants. <\/p>\n

A historical note<\/strong>: On April 11, 1935, the “Stresa Peace Conference” was convened. This location is situated in front of Isola Bella, but the 4-day conference was then held in the Borromean Palace on Isola Bella. The participants were: Mussolini, Italy’s dictator; Mac Donald, Prime Minister of England; and Laval, Prime Minister of France. The goal was to counteract Hitler’s expansionism to ensure Austria’s independence. Unfortunately, the political events that soon followed showed that this peace conference ultimately had no success. <\/p>\n

After the wonderful tour, we continued to the neighboring island, Isola dei Pescatori.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Isola dei Pescatori, also known as Fishermen’s Island or Isola Superiore, is the only permanently inhabited island.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The characteristic alleys and houses with long balconies for drying fish, the small village square, the tree-lined promenade, and the main street make it one of the most romantic and picturesque places on the lake. Upon arrival, we enjoyed our well-deserved<\/strong> lunch break<\/strong>, and everyone had free<\/strong> time<\/strong> at their disposal<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Day 4: Return Journey – <\/strong>One should leave<\/strong><\/em>, <\/strong>when<\/strong><\/em> things are at their <\/strong>best<\/strong><\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this also applied to our trip. Many great experiences and perfect weather, neither too hot nor too cool, rounded off our Lago Maggiore trip. But as we all know, after the trip<\/strong> is before the trip<\/strong>, and two beautiful stops<\/strong> on the return journey<\/strong> over the Maloja Pass<\/strong> were, of course, a must. <\/p>\n
