Our grand tour through Switzerland, France, and Italy began cloudy. However, the further west we traveled, the brighter and clearer it became. Bern was our first stop<\/strong> and definitely worth a visit. <\/p>\n

Bern<\/strong> is the capital<\/strong> of Switzerland<\/strong> and the canton of Bern<\/strong>. It is among the cities with the highest<\/strong> quality of life<\/strong> worldwide. No wonder, as Bern is clean, rich in history, and simply a beautiful city. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Old Town<\/strong> of Bern<\/strong> is located in the city center<\/strong> on a rock, enclosed on three sides. The beautiful<\/strong> city<\/strong> is surrounded by the breathtaking aquamarine waters of the Aare<\/strong>. The best part is that it has preserved its medieval character and is a UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage site<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

In the center of Bern’s<\/strong> Old Town<\/strong> stands a beautiful structure called the Zytglogge<\/strong> Tower<\/strong>. This spectacular building was once the western gate<\/strong> of the city<\/strong> of Bern<\/strong> and was once used as a prison<\/strong>. Today, it is a landmark<\/strong> of the city<\/strong> and a popular<\/strong> attraction<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The Minster<\/strong>, as the locals<\/strong> call it, is a major attraction in Bern. Bern’s Cathedral<\/strong> is the largest<\/strong> church building<\/strong> in Switzerland<\/strong>, making it an impressive sight. The building<\/strong> itself is very beautiful<\/strong> and an excellent example of late Gothic<\/strong> style<\/strong> architecture. <\/p>\n

The Minster<\/strong> is quite old<\/strong>, as construction began in 1421<\/strong>, but it took several years for the landmark to be completed. The church was only completed 400<\/strong> years<\/strong> later<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

We explore the city of Bern<\/strong> with approx. 146,000 inhabitants<\/strong>. In the picture, you can see the Zytglogge Tower<\/strong> in the background and one of my guests<\/strong> in the foreground in front of the fountain<\/strong>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Bern<\/strong> is located directly on the Aare<\/strong>… the Aare is the longest river flowing entirely within Switzerland. Its total length is 288<\/strong> km<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Montreux<\/strong> is known for the Freddie<\/strong> Mercury<\/strong> Statue<\/strong>. Fans<\/strong> and admirers of the singer<\/strong> of the group<\/strong> Queen<\/strong> travel to Montreux from all over the world<\/strong>. They gather in crowds before the statue and pay tribute to their idol with various homages: flowers, often in Freddie’s<\/strong> favorite color<\/strong> yellow<\/strong>, poems, drawings, photos, and many other objects accumulate at the foot of the statue. <\/p>\n

We stayed overnight in beautiful \u00c9vian<\/strong>–les<\/strong>–Bains<\/strong> before continuing the next day to Geneva<\/strong>, Annecy<\/strong>, and Clermont<\/strong>–Ferrand<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geneva<\/strong><\/span> has become known, among other things, for the Flower Clock<\/strong>, the Jet<\/strong> d’Eau<\/strong>, and for the assassination<\/strong> of Sissi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the heart of the English Garden, you can discover the 12,000 varieties of flowers that make up the Flower Clock, created in 1955. Its motifs and floral arrangements are changed seasonally to the delight of visitors. In addition to its decorative value, the Flower Clock also tells time with Swiss precision: the displayed time is transmitted by radio. Another important detail: its second hand, with a length of 2.5 meters, is the largest in the world! <\/p>\n

Initially, the extent of the attack was not recognized: “Sisi<\/strong>” died an almost incidental death, which befell her about an hour and a half after the assassination in her suite at the “Hotel Beau Rivage”<\/strong>. In that house<\/strong>, where in October 1987<\/strong>, the Minister-President of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, Uwe<\/strong> Barschel<\/strong>, was also found dead. In contrast to the mysterious theories surrounding Barschel’s death, everything is clear in the “Sisi<\/strong> case”: It was murder \u2013 but essentially just a temporary anticipation of the imminent end, for which the 60<\/strong>–year-old<\/strong> Empress<\/strong> of Austria and Queen of Hungary was already preparing. <\/p>\n

Originally only a few meters high, the fountain<\/strong> served as a pressure relief valve<\/strong>, functioning as a water tower<\/strong> for the 1885<\/strong>-built pressurized water pipeline<\/strong> of the Forces Motrices de la Coulouvreni\u00e8re<\/em> power plant, which the Geneva jewelers<\/strong> used to operate<\/strong> their machines<\/strong>. This absorbed unwanted peaks during work interruptions and indicated overpressure. <\/p>\n

In 1891<\/strong>, the City<\/strong> of Geneva<\/strong> decided to move the large<\/strong> fountain<\/strong> into the lake basin as a tourist<\/strong> landmark<\/strong> and to increase<\/strong> the water pressure<\/strong>. In 1951, the current system was built, which has two pumps with a total output of approx. 1000<\/strong> kW<\/strong>. It expels<\/strong> 500<\/strong> liters<\/strong> of lake water<\/strong> per second<\/strong> at a speed<\/strong> of 200<\/strong> km<\/strong>\/h<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The next day, we went for a city tour<\/strong> of Clermont-Ferrand<\/strong>, then on to the <\/span>garden Jardins du Manoir<\/strong> d\u2019Eyrignac<\/strong> and further to Sarlat<\/strong>, where we stayed for 4 nights.<\/p>\n

Clermont<\/strong>–Ferrand<\/strong> is also a beautiful<\/strong> city<\/strong> with many great churches<\/strong>, squares<\/strong>, and cafes<\/strong>… I cannot capture all impressions here, but our beautiful group photo in front of the statue<\/strong> of Vercingetorix<\/strong> certainly deserves a mention.<\/p>\n

Also worth mentioning are the two cathedrals in Clermont<\/strong>–Ferrand<\/strong>. The Cathedral of Notre<\/strong>–Dame<\/strong> de<\/strong> l\u2019Assomption<\/strong> is the Gothic<\/strong>, Roman Catholic episcopal church of the Archdiocese of Clermont, located in the center of the city of Clermont-Ferrand. It was built starting in 1262<\/strong>, following the model<\/strong> of Gothic<\/strong> cathedrals<\/strong> in \u00cele-de-France<\/strong>. The characteristic building material is black Volvic<\/strong> stone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The Church of Notre-Dame-du-Port<\/strong> is representative of the regional Auvergnat Romanesque architectural school and the oldest<\/strong> of the preserved<\/strong> churches<\/strong> of this school. The former Romanesque Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand would also belong to it as its mother church, had it not had to make way for a new Gothic building. <\/p>\n

The Lascaux<\/strong> Cave<\/strong> is a famous prehistoric cave painting<\/strong> monument<\/strong> located in Montignac<\/strong> in the Dordogne<\/strong> department in France. It houses some of the most impressive<\/strong> Paleolithic<\/strong> cave paintings<\/strong> in the world, dating from approximately 17,000<\/strong> to 15,000<\/strong> BC<\/strong>. The cave has been a UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage site<\/strong> since 1979<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Lascaux<\/strong> Caves<\/strong> were discovered in 1940<\/strong> by four teenagers<\/strong> exploring the area. What they found inside the caves was absolutely breathtaking<\/strong>: Wall paintings<\/strong>, approximately 17,000<\/strong> years<\/strong> old, depicting a variety of animals such as bison<\/strong>, horses<\/strong>, deer<\/strong>, and many others. <\/p>\n

It is difficult to say exactly how old the paintings are. Unfortunately, the original cave is no longer accessible to the public due to mold infestation, but an incredible, faithful replica left us all speechless. I can only recommend everyone to visit the cave. Absolutely worth seeing\u2026 <\/p>\n

The next highlight was not long in coming: Ch\u00e2teau des Milandes<\/strong><\/p>\n

The castle<\/strong> was built in 1489<\/strong> by Fran\u00e7ois<\/strong> de<\/strong> Caumont<\/strong>, Count<\/strong> of Castelnaud<\/strong>, at the initiative of his wife Claude<\/strong> de<\/strong> Cardaillac<\/strong>. He also owned the fortresses of Castelnaud and Berbigui\u00e8res, between which the castle was situated. Until 1535<\/strong>, the castle<\/strong> remained the main residence<\/strong> of this family<\/strong>. In the French Revolution<\/strong>, it was expropriated<\/strong>. Afterwards, it passed through several<\/strong> hands<\/strong>, but was not significantly changed. <\/p>\n

However, it became famous through the purchase by Josephine Baker:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1938, the castle was first rented by <\/strong>Josephine Baker<\/strong> and then purchased in 1947. She arranged for electricity and water connections in the castle and in the adjacent village of Milandes, making it the first village in the <\/strong>P\u00e9rigord<\/strong> with these amenities. Josephine Baker also commissioned a complete renovation of the interior.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, the castle is open to the public for tourists. A birds of prey flight show awaits guests, and the interior of the castle and the church can be visited. The garden and a nice caf\u00e9 are also available to guests. <\/p>\n

The next day, we went deep underground, namely to the mysterious Gouffre<\/strong> de<\/strong> Padirac<\/strong>, better known as the “Padirac Chasm.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come along and descend with us into one of the most interesting abysses in France…<\/strong><\/p>\n

No sooner said than done, we naturally didn’t need to be told twice. The headsets<\/strong> were quickly distributed and we were off on foot<\/strong> or by<\/strong> elevator<\/strong>, individually selectable depending on fitness level<\/strong>. I<\/strong> and Christine<\/strong> were the last<\/strong> and so everyone could explore the interesting cave system<\/strong> individually<\/strong> at their own pace<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

After the coffee break, we continued to Rocamadour.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And Rocamadour<\/strong> is a so-called Grand<\/strong> Site<\/strong> de<\/strong> France<\/strong> (major landmark of France), which we naturally did not<\/strong> miss<\/strong>. The city<\/strong> is built on 3<\/strong> levels<\/strong>. First of all, we went to a beautiful vantage point,<\/strong> where we could take fantastic photos<\/strong>. Afterwards, we took the elevator<\/strong> down<\/strong> and explored the middle<\/strong> level<\/strong> of the city, which also houses the numerous churches including the Black<\/strong> Madonna<\/strong>. Then we climbed down the last steps into the actual village<\/strong> with numerous shops<\/strong> and caf\u00e9s<\/strong>. We then went back up to the very top by<\/strong> elevator<\/strong>. The rock city<\/strong> is incredibly worth seeing<\/strong> and the church<\/strong> with the Black<\/strong> Madonna<\/strong> is a must<\/strong> see<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After a wonderful drive through the scenic Perigord, we reached Domme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Domme<\/strong> is a bastide<\/strong>, i.e. a small<\/strong>, fortified<\/strong> town<\/strong> with a regular layout, which was newly built from the ground up in southwestern France in the Middle Ages. Typically, the streets of Domme intersect at right angles, the squares are square, there is a large market hall and the town is fortified. Philip<\/strong> III<\/strong>, called “the<\/strong> Bold<\/strong>“, is the founder<\/strong> of Domme<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Domme<\/strong> is remarkably well<\/strong> preserved<\/strong>, the city walls<\/strong> and large gates<\/strong> that once surrounded<\/strong> the city<\/strong> are still largely present. The stone houses<\/strong> have a flair<\/strong> like nowhere else. A unique architectural<\/strong> heritage<\/strong>, including the city walls<\/strong> and the Porte<\/strong> des<\/strong> Tours<\/strong>, where the imprisoned Templars<\/strong> made engravings<\/strong> that can still be seen today.<\/p>\n

We discovered Domme<\/strong> comfortably by tourist train<\/strong> and it was simply fantastic<\/strong>. Great view<\/strong> down into the beautiful<\/strong> landscape<\/strong> included. <\/p>\n

One day more beautiful than the other and so the next day, right after breakfast, we went to the city of Sarlat.<\/strong> The city was founded in the 9th century<\/strong> around a monastery and quickly developed into a prosperous<\/strong> city<\/strong>. Its current appearance<\/strong> is characterized by the Renaissance buildings<\/strong> of the 13th<\/strong> and 14th<\/strong> centuries<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

In recent decades, Sarlat<\/strong> has been completely restored and, along with Carcassone<\/strong>, is one of the most beautiful examples of a medieval city<\/strong>. With the construction of the departmental road “La Traverse<\/strong>” in 1837, which runs through the town, the development of Sarlat<\/strong> into a modern<\/strong> city<\/strong> began, much to the pride of its citizens. More recently, the cityscape was redesigned according to the Malraux Law of 1962 and Sarlat was awarded the title “City of Art and History<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

And that is how we perceived the city<\/strong>. Beautiful<\/strong> restored houses from bygone eras. Great squares<\/strong>, churches<\/strong> and caf\u00e9s<\/strong> made our hearts beat faster and a special highlight was the Lantern of the Dead<\/em>.<\/strong> The ten<\/strong> meter<\/strong> high<\/strong>, cone-shaped<\/strong> lantern of the dead<\/strong> was erected in honor<\/strong> of Saint Bernard<\/strong>, who stayed in Sarlat<\/strong> in 1147<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Regarding the first picture: The “Goose Square<\/strong>” in Sarlat<\/strong>, officially called “Place du March\u00e9 aux Oies<\/strong>“, is a central square in the heart of the old town, where a goose market<\/strong> used to take place. It is known for its charming buildings, including the Gisson manor and the Maison de la Bo\u00e9tie. A bronze<\/strong> goose<\/strong> sculpture<\/strong> marks the square. <\/span><\/p>\n

After we were able to explore Sarlat extensively, we continued to the Gardens<\/strong> of<\/strong> Marqueyssac<\/strong>. An impressive garden<\/strong> that was laid out high up on a rock plateau<\/strong>. Magnificent views awaited us and also the king<\/strong> of the feathered creatures<\/strong>, the peacock<\/strong>, was not long in coming. Coffee break<\/strong> included<\/strong>!!! <\/p>\n

After leaving the Gardens of Marqueyssac behind, we went to the famous<\/strong>, medieval<\/strong> Beynac<\/strong> Fortress<\/strong>. Today, it is one of the best-preserved<\/strong> castles<\/strong> in France<\/strong>. Built in the 12th century as a mere keep<\/strong> on a 150<\/strong> meter<\/strong> high and difficult to access limestone plateau<\/strong> above the Dordogne<\/strong>, the complex served as a strategically<\/strong> optimal<\/strong> observation<\/strong> and defense post<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After its construction by Maynard<\/em><\/strong> de<\/strong> Beynac<\/strong><\/em>, Richard the Lionheart<\/strong> seized the castle<\/strong> in 1194<\/strong> in his capacity as Duke<\/strong> of Aquitaine<\/strong> for a short time and entrusted it to the royal governor Marchadier<\/strong>. After the death<\/strong> of Richard<\/strong> in 1199<\/strong>, the fortification returned to the possession of the local nobility<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The drive up to the castle alone was extremely exciting and once at the top, our guests enjoyed the breathtaking view.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last but not least, we then went to La Roque-Gageac. <\/strong><\/p>\n

La Roque-Gageac<\/strong> lies as if painted in the P\u00e9rigord<\/strong><\/em> Noir<\/strong><\/em> at the foot of a south-facing cliff. Its golden yellow<\/strong> houses<\/strong> with their roofs<\/strong> of slate<\/strong> or brown<\/strong> tiles<\/strong> are reflected in the waters<\/strong> of the Dordogne<\/strong>. On its banks, the descendants of those gabares<\/em>, which transported wine<\/strong> and walnuts<\/strong> in the 19th<\/strong> century<\/strong>, are still moored today.<\/p>\n

The village consists of only a few<\/strong> rows of houses<\/strong>. Much had to be rebuilt after the devastating disaster<\/strong> of the winter of 1957<\/strong>. On January 17, 2500<\/strong> cubic meters<\/strong> of limestone rock<\/strong> crashed<\/strong> onto the village below. <\/p>\n

When the rescue workers intervened, they recovered three bodies from under the rubble. The subsequent safety work on the rocks lasted ten years. In January 2010, part of the ceiling of the cave fort collapsed. 750 tons of boulders had to be removed. The construction work cost 1.6 million euros. <\/p>\n

The fortress in the rock:<\/strong> In the rocks<\/strong> that rise above the Dordogne village, remains<\/strong> of a fortress<\/strong> from the 12th<\/strong> century<\/strong> can be seen. The bishops<\/strong> from Sarlat<\/strong> found refuge<\/strong> there during the religious wars<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

We, on the other hand, boarded a ship and enjoyed the fantastic views from the water in the best weather. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

After four<\/strong> great<\/strong> and eventful<\/strong> days<\/strong> in the Perigord<\/strong>, we finally headed back towards home<\/strong>, but three<\/strong> beautiful<\/strong> days<\/strong> with a stop<\/strong> in Lyon<\/strong>, Chamonix<\/strong> awaited us. Lago<\/strong> Maggiore<\/strong> and at the end we ended our trip<\/strong> with a lunch<\/strong> on Lake Garda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We all particularly liked Lyon. The city with its numerous churches and squares is simply worth a visit. <\/p>\n

A highlight<\/strong> to visit is the Notre-Dame de Fourvi\u00e8re<\/strong>. It is a Roman Catholic<\/strong> votive<\/strong> and pilgrimage church<\/strong> on the Fourvi\u00e8re hill<\/strong> in Lyon. It was built from 1872<\/strong> and consecrated in 1896<\/strong>. The following year, it was elevated to the rank of Basilica minor<\/strong>. Since 1998<\/strong>, it has been a UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage Site<\/strong> together with other historical sites in Lyon. <\/p>\n

The building shows the historicist<\/strong>–eclectic<\/strong> style typical of French<\/strong> sacred buildings<\/strong> of this period with great attention to decorative detail. Romanesque<\/strong> and Byzantine<\/strong> architectural forms predominate. <\/p>\n

The Ionic<\/strong> column<\/strong> is less bulky and has a much narrower<\/strong> shaft<\/strong>. Its most distinctive feature is the capital, whose characteristic snail-shaped<\/strong> twisted<\/strong> volutes<\/strong> immediately catch the eye. The slender<\/strong> Ionic<\/strong> column<\/strong> necessarily requires marble<\/strong> as a building material. <\/p>\n

Also to be seen in Lyon is the Fontaine<\/strong> Bartholdi<\/strong>. The fountain is located on the Place des Terreaux<\/strong> in the center of Lyon<\/strong>. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Lyon<\/strong> before continuing refreshed to Chamonix<\/strong> the next day. There, too, we were greeted by a cloudless<\/strong> sky<\/strong> with views of Mont<\/strong> Blanc<\/strong> and numerous paragliders<\/strong> in the air. A sight<\/strong> for the gods<\/strong>, but see for yourselves. <\/p>\n

Our journey continued through the beautiful Aosta Valley<\/strong> to Lago<\/strong> Maggiore<\/strong>, where we checked into the Hotel Regina<\/strong> Palace<\/strong>. After checking<\/strong> in<\/strong>, we boarded the boat<\/strong> with Capitano<\/strong> Piermario<\/strong>, where we ended our day<\/strong> with water<\/strong> and wine<\/strong>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
