What to expect:
On foot, we make our way to the center of St. Johann in Tirol. Among the locals, St. Johann is better known as “Sänihansn.” With approximately 10,000 inhabitants and a historically pronounced market right, St. Johann is therefore a market town. Small but mighty, this beautiful place is located at the end of the Söll-Leukental valley. The region was already settled by Celtic tribes in the 4th century BC. These were displaced by the Romans, and the region was transformed into the Roman province of Noricum in 15 BC.
You will learn everything about the historical development of this region, the importance of mining activity around 1540 at the Rerobichl near Oberndorf in Tirol. Likewise, the baroque redesign of St. Johann in the 17th and 18th centuries led to the nickname Baroque St. Johann and is omnipresent.
We will visit:
✓ The baroque parish church of St. John.
✓ The beautiful market square with the old post and telegraph office, old houses with Lüftlmalerei.
✓ The Landhaus Schwarzinger, a farmhouse with a baroque facade, from the 17th century.
✓ The St. Nepomuk, built around 1717, who was canonized as the keeper of the confessional secret.
✓ The baroque Antonius Chapel with the oldest preserved dome landscape fresco of St. Johann.
✓ The Matthias Wishofer Monument with an explanation of the history around Anno 1809.
✓ The Huber Bräuturm under the management of the Huber family in the 5th generation, whose slogan “the beer from here” could not be more fitting.
✓ Afterwards, we recommend a hearty stop with original St. Johanner Würschtl and a matching Huber beer.
TIP: From the END of November to December 24, the St. Johanner Christmas market opens its doors every Friday to Sunday during Advent.
Every Friday from March to November 2025 the motto is “Griasdi am St. Johanner Hauptplatz”, when connoisseurs from near and far go on a voyage of discovery at the St. Johanner weekly market!
