Round Trips in South Tyrol
Experience the dolce vita firsthand
The southern side of the Alps is characterized by a milder climate. This is precisely why it is predestined for wine and apple cultivation. In contrast, schnapps has always been distilled on the northern side of the Alps, and already in the time of Maria Theresa, in the 18th century, the “Wilschönau” farmers were granted the sole right to distill Krautinger, the turnip schnapps, so that the inhabitants of the high valley could trade with it and survive better. From this perspective, the southern side of the Alps was and still is agriculturally favored.

Sterzing
Behind the Brenner Pass, you will immediately sense the Italian way of life. Sterzing in the Wipptal valley combines medieval charm with a special atmosphere.
On a guided tour of the town, you will discover its history and cultural highlights.
For example: the medieval old town, the Zwölferturm tower, the Heiliggeistkirche church, the Lüsterweibchen statue, and much more.
Neustift Monastery
From the Inn Valley in North Tyrol, the route leads to Innsbruck, past the provincial capital, into the Wipp Valley, which runs south. The Romans already knew how to utilize the lowest Alpine pass at 1,370 m above sea level. Lively trade has always been conducted, and both Brixen and Neustift Monastery were important religious centers.
On the way to Merano, Neustift Monastery is perfect as a short stopover or even as a day trip with a monastery tour and wine tasting.
Neustift Monastery, the Augustinian Canons Regular monastery, 3 km north of Brixen, is an absolute cultural-historical highlight.
The monastery complex consists of several buildings, such as:
✓ Two large courtyards
✓ Large new monastery square
✓ The Castel Sant’Angelo/St. Michael’s Chapel at the entrance is a crenellated circular building from the Romanesque period and a miniature version of the Roman original
✓ Monastery garden and monastery winery
✓ Wunderbrunnen Courtyard (paintings in the frieze depict the Seven Wonders of the World and a monastery view from 1669)
✓ Three-aisled Basilica “Our Lady,” which is considered a prime example of German Baroque art south of the Brenner Pass
Tip: A monastery tour or wine tasting can also be booked for your group.
Merano
Merano, the Pearl of the Alps or the Nice of Tyrol, is how the city on the southern side of the Alps is still affectionately called.
Precisely because of its Mediterranean influence, the mountain-ringed city of Merano is particularly popular. Palms grow in the valley, and at 3,000 m, snow often still lies. Incredible contrasts and crystal-clear water flow through the famous Alpine river, the Passer.
Merano from Above
Come with me and discover the city of Merano from high above. A special feature is the chairlift that connects the city center of Merano with Dorf Tirol during the day. The valley station of the Küchelberg Lift is located in the center of the spa town, right next to the Princely Castle. Get in and enjoy the city from above!!
Moni’s Tip: At the top ☝️, at the exit, a beautiful panoramic restaurant awaits you with a fantastic view over the spa town!
Route
Attached is the route from Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass, 1,374 m above sea level, continuing past Sterzing to Neustift Monastery (stop as described above), then on to Bolzano, past the magnificent Sigmundskron Castle complex, to Merano. City tour and free time afterwards. In good weather, the return journey via the Jaufen Pass, 2,094 m, is recommended. A wonderfully beautiful mountain scenery awaits you with a photo stop at the pass summit.
*Please note that your South Tyrol day trip or multi-day tour can be individually adapted to your group and interests. For questions and information, I am always available by phone or email. I look forward to your inquiries.
South Tyrol offers other interesting stops such as Sterzing (beautiful medieval town) or Brixen. Also, Bolzano with the world-famous “Ötzi Museum” (advance booking highly recommended for groups) and its historic old town, as well as a Dolomites round trip or the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, are the highlights of South Tyrol.
Moni’s Tip: When driving over the Jaufen Pass, we pass Andreas Hofer’s birthplace.
