Paragliding Performance Training in Bassano, Italy
With DHV Performance Trainer Max&Noah Mayer and Monika Gründhammer
Driver: Marco Gentilini
Every year in March, it’s that time again: the dusty paragliders are taken from the cellar, the suitcase is packed, and we head to the weather-favored southern side of the Alps.
Many of our customers use the training after the long winter break to get back in shape and trained for the new flying season. And this makes perfect sense and brings joy at the same time.
A group of max. 14 pilots takes off, and the gathering/carpool of the traveling flyers usually starts from Munich. From there, we continue into the Inn Valley, over the Brenner Pass to Trento Nord, where we turn into the Valsugana Valley. We then follow the Brenta until we reach Borso del Grappa. And just like that, the first mountain range from the sea opens up, home to one of the best and weather-favored flying areas worldwide. MAGIC BASSANO!
Take-off & Landing Sites at a Glance
In the afternoon, when the sun slowly sinks lower and disappears, the mountain wind sets in, and for this option, there is also the appropriate landing direction. In strong winds, no landing pattern is flown; instead, pilots descend downwind of the landing site.
The take-off sites are also briefly described and explained from the landing site, including why we drive to certain locations depending on the wind, etc. No sooner said than done, after the radio distribution with a frequency check, we head up to the take-off site for the first time.
The lines are meticulously checked again, reserve pins are inspected, all harnesses are fastened, carabiners are locked, helmet on and shoes tied, canopy and leading edge openings open, wind okay and airspace clear? These are the questions that concern us before take-off, before it’s finally time to say “TAKE OFF”
The five-point check, the control glance, and the explanation for a controlled launch abort are the things that are repeated and explained, especially during the first launches.
Pre-flight check before it’s time for “TAKE OFF”
Maneuver Briefing
The next day started early, as we wanted to make full use of the good weather. After an early breakfast, we went to the seminar room for the theoretical maneuver briefing. No sooner said than done, all participants listened attentively to Max’s explanations, and everyone diligently participated.
Thus, all A-license relevant maneuvers such as pitching, rolling, collapses unheld and held were theoretically practiced, so that it would work flawlessly in the air immediately afterward. Subsequently, we went up, and I took my pole position at the launch site. 🙂
Implementation in Practice
After so much flying, a rest is also necessary. Furthermore, due to the west wind component, we had relatively challenging conditions and thermals at the Stella launch site, so we decided to take a break. We waited comfortably until things calmed down a bit. That was also the best decision, and in the meantime, I was able to practice ground handling and the correct reverse launch with Marie-Luise. From later afternoon, we had luck; the wind subsided, and Marie-Luise launched like a feather. 🙂
In the evening, we usually went to Ristorante Antica Abbazia, where all participants were very impressed by the excellent cuisine and selection.
Weather Briefing
Every morning, a joint weather briefing was on the agenda. Together, the respective day was analyzed and discussed, including why the weather is as it is, what that means for us, and how the day is likely to unfold.
Even the participants/innen took on the task of the weather check and performed exceptionally well… didn’t you, dear Meteo Markus. TOP!!!
We all had a lot of fun with Heiko, as he contributed to us becoming a real tree recovery team. Don’t worry, Heiko didn’t fly into a tree, at least not at the launch site, but his canopy really wanted to launch, and Heiko, already clipped in forward, was unprepared for the oncoming gust, and just like that, half of the canopy was caught in the tree behind Heiko. Oh Heiko….:-)
It can happen, and all students learn from it that the reverse launch method is important in developing thermal conditions. 🙂
The days passed, and we were able to fly every day, except for Wednesday, which proved too stormy and rainy. So we stayed on the ground, and everyone pursued their personal wishes. From SPA with sauna at Garden Relais, to olive oil shopping at Oleificio Gnesotto, to taking a walk, exploring Bassano City, drinking cappuccino and Aperol….
In the evening, at the request of our participants, we went once more to Antica Abbazia, where we comfortably ended the week with a final good meal and Limoncello. Nora particularly enjoyed it… the Limoncello wouldn’t let her go. 🙂
On the last morning, before we started our journey home, we first drove up towards Cassette to get an idea of the wind situation. No sooner said than done, we were partly fogged in repeatedly, and the wind also came from the southeast due to thermals. So we went back down to Stella, where we productively used the waiting time until the fog cleared, and Christian used the time to practice reverse launching and ground handling exercises with launch aborts.
All steps were explained by me again, step by step, and recorded and provided via video for the students. (for practice at home) Christian was able to reverse launch the canopy multiple times and controlledly lay it down again. Until Peter meant well with us, the fog receded, and Christian promptly put his first reverse launch into practice.
Happy End
In the end, everyone was still able to launch and glide down for the last time this week. What a fantastic conclusion. Happy landing – happy ending!!!
Heartfelt congratulations to our three candidates, Philipp, Sarah, and Malte, on passing their A-license exam.
A big THANK YOU to all participants for the brilliant week from the entire flight instructor team. You were GREAT!!!
