Bergdoktor Excursion
For two days, I had the pleasure of accompanying and guiding the cheerful travel group from Vöhringer Reisen. Right from the hotel, I was joyfully greeted by the entire group, and so nothing stood in the way of a great Bergdoktor excursion.
We first drove to Going am Wilden Kaiser, where the first filming location already awaited us. The beautiful village square ensemble with the inn “Zum Wilden Kaiser”, the Sonnenapotheke, the police station (which in real life represents the municipality), the shell-shaped village stage, and the baroque Church of the Holy Cross are worth a visit.
The Going Parish Church was built in 1774/75 by master builder Andre Huber from Kitzbühel. The Madonna figure in the left side altar dates from the predecessor church around 1358, and the baroque high altar painting from 1690 by Ignaz Faistenberger. The building and the altars are Late Baroque, while the stucco work was already created in the Rococo period. By the way, the church is located on the Tyrolean section of the Way of St. James.
Ellmau
Our next stop led us directly to Ellmau, where we walked up for 10 minutes to the Bergdoktor’s house. Upon request, I can gladly organize a taxi for guests with limited mobility so that all guests can visit the house on site. 🙂
A fantastic view over Ellmau and of the Wilder Kaiser included.
Wochenbrunneralm
Next Bergdoktor Filming Location Stop: The Wochenbrunneralm
For lunch, I organized a pleasant stop at the famous Wochenbrunneralm. The Wochenbrunner Alm in Ellmau, Austria, is also a popular filming location for the TV series “Der Bergdoktor”. In the series, it is used as an Alm where the Bergdoktor and his family, as well as other characters, spend time, for example, for excursions or refreshments.
After lunch, we went on a short hike to the charming Anna Grotto. A 20-minute ascent allowed us to enjoy the forest and the fresh air.
*The journey is the destination… especially in the pilgrimage year 2025, under the motto “Pilgrims of Hope,” it is a central theme.
Sonnendorf Söll
Our 3rd Bergdoktor stop led us to the Sonnendorf Söll. Once there, it wasn’t long before Peda, our tractor driver, drove us up the mountain to the Bergdoktor’s house. Peda, with his insider knowledge, who has been closely involved in the filming for many years, leaves no question unanswered for Bergdoktor fans. 🙂
Detailed explanations are available directly in front of the Bergdoktor House at 1,000 m above sea level. Guests can expect not only many interesting facts about the filming, but also the Tyrolean spirit in the Bergdoktor kitchen is, of course, already prepared. 🙂
What a great day following in the footsteps of the Bergdoktor.
Kitzbühel Alps round Trip
Day 2: The next day, we embarked on the grand tour around the entire Kitzbühel Alps.
The Great Rettenstein, a prominent peak with an elevation of 2,366 m, is the geographical center of the Kitzbühel Alps and is an important part of the nature recreation area.
From there, we went via the Brixental to the Inntal, and further into the Zillertal, where, in Zell am Ziller, we drove past the pilgrimage church Maria Rast and one of the oldest, former school buildings, then over the Gerlos Pass into Pinzgau/Salzburg. A photo stop at the Durlassboden Reservoir was, of course, a must. We built a small snowman and enjoyed the beautiful view of the 3,000-meter peaks of the Zillertal Alps.
*The Durlassboden Reservoir, also known as Gerlos Dam, is a high-mountain lake in Austria. It is located in the Zillertal, more precisely on the outskirts of Gerlos, and forms the border between the federal states of Salzburg and Tyrol.
Krimml Waterfalls
In Krimml, at the Krimml Waterfalls, we visited the unique waterfalls. Over a total height of 380 meters, the masses of water thunder in the Pinzgau village of Krimml over three cascades into the depths. This makes the Krimml Waterfalls the largest waterfalls in Europe and the fifth-largest waterfalls in the world – or in other words: a wild natural spectacle that simply must be seen! Around 400,000 guests from all over the world are annually captivated by this natural spectacle. We can only confirm that. 🙂
Pinzgau
We then returned via the beautiful Pinzgau with a view of the Großvenediger (unfortunately cloud-covered); nevertheless, we could see the beautiful Pinzgau cows, and the landscape with the Salzach river beside us was a dream. In Jochberg, we made another photo stop at the Jochbergwald Pilgrimage Chapel.
In the 19th century, the road over Pass Thurn had to be re-terraced for military-technical reasons, which completely marginalized the chapel at that time. In 1842, a new small church was built next to the old road with a simple, three-week construction, and the miraculous image was ceremoniously transferred.
Yes, and the miraculous image of this church is indeed very special.
History and Significance:
The miraculous image belongs to the “wounded cult images”, as it shows an injury in its depiction. A legend tells that a soldier tried to destroy the Madonna with his sword, whereupon blood is said to have flowed from the head of the Mother of God. The Jochbergwald Pilgrimage Chapel, where the miraculous image is kept, is a popular pilgrimage site. Many
The miraculous image belongs to the so-called “wounded cult images”, just like the late Gothic Man of Sorrows in the Augustinian Museum in Rattenberg;
Thank You!
Afterwards, we went through Kitzbühel for a guided city tour, where my guests learned all the interesting facts about the origin of Kitzbühel. Tired and happy, we reached the hotel, and I look forward to welcoming you again on the next Tour de Tirol, including the Bergdoktor.
