Let there be (Northern) Light!
What a journey – and what a wonderful group! My 15-member travel group and I were able to experience incredibly beautiful days in Tromsø/Northern Norway.
Hotel
Located in a magnificent waterfront setting in Tromsø, often called the Paris of the North, the Scandic Ishavshotel awaited us with breathtaking views of the harbor and the city.
Almost all rooms at the Scandic Ishavshotel are located at the end of the pier and offer panoramic views of the surroundings.
View of the Arctic Cathedral

Tromsdalen Kirke
Immediately on the first day after our arrival, we continued with a guided city tour through the tranquil city center of Tromsø with City Guide Fabian 1, traveling by bus over the famous “Tromsøbrua” bridge to the Arctic Cathedral “Tromsdalen kirke”.
This unique triangular church was designed by Jan Inge Hovig. In the background, the distinctive peak of Tromsdalstind rises, beautifully enveloped in a white mantle of snow and ice.

Again and again, a gap in the clouds appeared, and we were able to admire the Northern Lights.
What an experience…
Aurora Borealis
In the evening, we then went to the Aurora Camp, where, with Guide Fabian 2, we had the great fortune to actually witness the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) live.
Lissy, a participant in the trip, was able to capture magnificent photos with her new Samsung. We thank Lissy for her kind permission to publish her photos online here.

Reindeer Camp
Our journey led us to a 4-hour reindeer camp excursion. There, we had the opportunity to practice lasso throwing (for reindeer hunting), feed and pet reindeer, and a reindeer sleigh ride (approx. 10 minutes) was also on the agenda.
Guests could warm up repeatedly in the Sami tents (called Lavvu or Kote) and refresh themselves with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. For lunch, reindeer stew was served, with or without meat. Afterwards, an informative discussion round took place with a Sami, who shared insights into his culture and customs.
The following pictures show Elisabeth and Rosa feeding the reindeer, our group, and Rosemarie & I on the reindeer sleigh.
Husky Safari or Fishing & Fjord
Today, guests had a choice of activities. Some went on a dog sledding safari, while others went fishing and on a fjord trip.
Both were excellent, and both excursions were successful, though it took some persuasion for Rosemarie and Claudia.
“Steering the dog sled themselves” proved to be too adventurous, so the ladies were royally chauffeured through the winter landscape. But in the end, everyone was happy and returned with smiling faces. All’s well that ends well…
The results of the FISHING&FJORD excursion were also impressive. Elfriede Mohrenberger was successful with her very first cast and insisted on “kissing” her fish.
On the last evening before our journey home, we were able to dine together once more. Our chosen spot was the restaurant “Egon,” located directly on the main street Storgata. A wonderful, eventful holiday in the city of Tromsø, also known as the Gateway to the Arctic Sea, thus came to an end.
Our Sincere Thanks to all Participants – You Were Fantastic!
Your Tour Guide, Monika
