About the history:
Historically, Merano has a lot to offer: from the glacier mummy “Ötzi”, the Raetians and Romans, to the Bavarians, who settled the area coming from the north.
Around 1100, Merano was still a small village, and it was only in the 12th century, under Meinhard II., that Merano developed into a medieval city. He had arcades, walls, and city gates built, and numerous residences and castles emerged in the surrounding area. However, the heyday was short-lived…
In the 19th century, even the Austrian Empress Sissi spent two winters in Merano in the 1870s. At that time, Merano experienced a renewed period of prosperity, but you will, of course, learn more about why and how in my city tour.
What awaits you on a city tour in Merano:
✓ Thermenplatz
✓ The Passer River, with its two beautiful bridges (Post Bridge and Theater Bridge)
✓ Hospice Church of the Holy Spirit with a wonderfully beautiful Gothic entrance portal
✓ Sissi Monument
✓ Bozner Gate
✓ Sandplatz
✓ Wandelhalle
✓ Winter and Summer Promenade
✓ Powder Tower
✓ Old Town with preserved Gothic arcaded streets
✓ Parish Square and St. Nicholas Parish Church with interior visit (telling the legend of the 3 golden spheres)
✓ The Old Kurhaus and Kurpromenade
✓ Town Hall, Princely Castle, and Municipal Theater
✓ Leisure time afterwards
Moni’s Tip: Of course, the stop for refreshments afterwards should not be missed. A good glass of wine, Spaghetti Carbonara or Aglio e Olio, and a fine coffee, espresso, or a gelato. What more could your heart desire…
