What to expect:

What would Kitzbühel be without the chamois, the Hahnenkamm Race, or Toni Sailer? This sophisticated Alpine town attracts thousands of visitors annually with the commotion of the most famous downhill race, the Streif-Abfahrt-Hahnenkamm. However, Kitzbühel has much more to offer than just the ski circus.

Celts, Romans, Bavarians, and copper mining activities, dating back to before Christ, make the region a truly special jewel. The combination of old and new, between historic walls and boutiques, makes most hearts beat faster.

What you will experience with me:

From the Pfarrau bus parking lot, we will proceed through the city park up to the historic church hill. There, we will visit the Gothic Parish Church of St. Andrew, which, like most churches in Tyrol, was converted to Baroque style in the 18th century. One of the art-historical highlights for me is the so-called “Sesselfrau” (Seated Woman), a processional figure of the significant Rosary Confraternity.

The Baroque Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) with its thick church tower and unique votive paintings is also worth a visit. Since 1847, the large Marian bell from the Grassmayr foundry in Innsbruck has found its place there. Of particular importance and worth mentioning is the small, unassuming Mount of Olives Chapel with its death light located in the tower.

The ‘Kirchenacker,’ as the cemetery was often called in earlier times, is home to some famous personalities, including the graves of Toni Sailer, Alfons Walde, Meinhard Schwarzenegger, Franz Reisch, the Lamberg family, and Peter Aufschnaiter, to name just a few.

In the town, we will explore the ‘Vorderstadt’ and ‘Hinterstadt’ (Upper and Lower Town), delve into the town’s history, and discover its coat of arms. We will visit the historic town fountain featuring Emperor Maximilian I, the Bavarian Duke Ludwig II the Strict, and the sovereign Margarethe of Tyrol-Görz, better known as Margarethe von Maultasch. The reasons why she received this nickname will be exclusively revealed during my city tour. 🙂

Your state-certified city guide Monika wishes you a fantastic time.

Recommendation: To conclude, I recommend enjoying a pleasant coffee in one of Kitzbühel’s charming cafés. The wonderful ambiance within the old town walls/houses is unique, and the mountain landscape with the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm is unforgettable.
