About Switzerland

Switzerland covers an area of 41,290 km² and shares borders with five countries: Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Three major landscapes, characterized by the Alps in the south and east, the Central Plateau in the center, and the Jura Mountains in the northwest, await you and your group.

Furthermore, the Aare, with its 295 km, is the longest river in Switzerland; Lake Geneva, with 580 km², is the largest lake; and the Dufourspitze, at 4,634 m, is the highest mountain.

However, the Matterhorn is probably better known. Majestic and awe-inspiring, it rises a proud 4,478 meters. It is not without reason that it is the most photographed mountain in the world.

The numerous train journeys that leave nothing to be desired are also very popular. I would be pleased to accompany and guide your group on your desired train/bus tour and safely bring your group to the next location, hotel, or city tour.

St. John Müstair

An absolute MUST SEE for art-historically interested individuals and travel groups is the UNESCO World Heritage Site St. John Monastery, located in Val Müstair:

The monastery attracts visitors from near and far to the valley. Here, Benedictine daily life, cultural preservation, art, and research converge. The church houses the largest and best-preserved fresco cycle from the Early Middle Ages, and in the monastery museum, the over 1200-year history of the monastery comes alive.

St. John Monastery is also the namesake of the entire Val Müstair, for the establishment of the monastery was followed by the gradual settlement of the valley. Thus, the valley became known as Münstertal or Val Müstair from then on, because the Latin word for monastery is “monasterium“.

The Founding Myth

The legend tells that none other than Charlemagne laid the foundation stone for the monastery. Having just been crowned King of the Lombards, he was caught in a snowstorm on the Umbrail Pass. Out of gratitude for having survived it, he founded the monastery in Müstair in 775. So the legend goes. That there is truth to this is evident in the monastery church: The timbers in the roof structure were felled in the year of the monastery’s founding, the frescoes date from the founding period, and the stucco statue in the church bears witness to Charlemagne. The Carolingian frescoes subsequently earned the monastery its UNESCO label.

The Monastery Complex

The monastery complex unites 1200 years of history. The church and the Planta Tower with its swallowtail battlements form the most characteristic landmark of Müstair. The Planta Tower – presumably the oldest residential tower in the Alpine region – now houses the monastery museum. It offers a glimpse into the monastery rooms, from the cloister and the Gothic refectory to Baroque cells. The complex is completed by the Holy Cross Chapel and the Bishop’s Residence. This ensemble still shapes the appearance of the monastery. Originally founded as a monastery for monks, it has been a purely female convent since the 12th century. Today, eight Benedictine nuns live here.

I hope I have been able to open your art-loving heart and I can highly recommend St. John Müstair Monastery to you.

I would be pleased to accompany your group through beautiful Switzerland, and, upon request, a suitable monastery tour can be booked on site.
