Day trip to Herreninsel with Herrenchiemsee Palace
We, on the other hand, are setting out on the trail of Munich’s most famous resident, namely King Ludwig II, affectionately known as “Kini.”
Born in 1845 at Nymphenburg Palace Nymphenburg from the House of Wittelsbach, he had to take over the early death of his father, already at the tender age of 19, ascend the throne. He reigned until his death in 1886, although the cause of death/circumstances remain to this day considered unclear.
King Ludwig is considered one of the most colorful personalities of his time. He was a great fan, patron, and friend of Richard Wagner and his music. He loved nighttime carriage rides in winter to gaze at the bluish moonlight and immerse himself in a world of his own. It was not without reason that he was also known as the Fairy Tale King.
Ludwig II has gone down in Bavarian history as a passionate builder of castles. He wanted to build his now world-famous castles Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee, and Linderhof not only for himself, but also as a monument to his own memory. He certainly succeeded in creating a monument, but he did not quite manage to keep them for himself.
Today, Herrenchiemsee is one of Bavaria’s main attractions, with around 310,000 visitors annually.
Herreninsel
The castle is truly worth a visit and also the crossing from Prien a. Chiemsee to Herreninsel is uniquely beautiful. The state rooms can only be visited as part of a guided tour and can only be visited. Very beautiful is also the visit to the former parish church of St. Mary, just a few minutes away from a41> the landing stage on the Herreninsel.
We will also visit the former Augustinian monastery on Herrenchiemsee, where the Constitutional Convention took place in the old castle from August 10 to 23, 1948. After so much history, a stop for refreshments is a must. The former monastery restaurant serves excellent food, and a beer brewed according to Bavarian tradition is a must. Cheers!!!
Moni’s tip: The walking time from the landing stage/Herreninsel to the castle is approx. 20 minutes. Guests with limited mobility can enjoy the journey by carriage (approx. 10 euros per person).
