St. Barbara, patron saint of miners and of modern tunnel builders

A central legend says that Barbara found shelter in a crevice in the rock while fleeing from her strict father before her pursuers arrived. This is interpreted as a special sign for miners who work in underground tunnels and whose work is dangerous.

Commemoration day on December 4: Barbaratag is the most important holiday for miners and tunnel builders. On this day, they commemorate their patron saint, often with festivals, church services and special rituals such as the lighting of Barbara lights underground days.

Protection from dangers: Miners ask Saint Barbara for protection from the dangers of the mine, especially from accidents. Her intercession is considered protection against the danger of misfortune and death regarded.

Symbolism: Often it is associated with symbols such as the miner’s tools (hammer and iron) and a mining lamp depicted. Also their memorial day on December 4 is closely linked to the customs of the miners, especially through the setting up of Barbarazweigen, which are supposed to bloom at Christmas.

On December 4, a branch is cut that is supposed to bloom on Christmas Eve. The custom of Barbara branches is based on a legend about Saint Barbara: on her way to prison, a cherry branch caught in her dress. She placed it in a jug of water, and it began to bloom on the day of her execution. Therefore, the blooming of the branches cut around December 4 symbolizes new life and hope and is considered a good luck charm for the coming year.
