Sterzing – Vipiteno

Exploring Sterzing: A highlight in South Tyrol

As soon as you cross the Brenner Pass, you immediately notice that this is where the heart of Italy beats! Sterzing, the charming town in the Wipptal valley, enchants visitors with its unique flair and historical charm. A guided tour of Sterzing takes you into a world full of history and cultural treasures.

Highlights of a tour of Sterzing:

St. Johann City Tour

1. The medieval old town: The historic town center is a masterpiece of the Middle Ages. With its colorful facades and picturesque alleys, it tells stories from times gone by. Stroll through the streets and enjoy the unique atmosphere that makes Sterzing one of the most important destinations in South Tyrol.

2. The Zwölferturm: As one of the city’s most striking landmarks, the 46-meter-high Zwölferturm towers majestically over the old town. It is a popular photo motif and part of the historic city skyline, which can be viewed from the outside.

3. The Church of the Holy Spirit: The Church of the Holy Spirit is an absolute MUST SEE. Its Gothic frescoes and impressive Last Judgment fresco captivate visitors and immerse them in the city’s religious past.

4. The Lüsterweibchen: An insider tip is the Lüsterweibchen in the old town hall, which serves as a special work of art in the council chamber. Let yourself be surprised by this fascinating piece of history!

5. Roman milestone: In the courtyard of the town hall, there is a Roman milestone from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus (around 200 AD). Discovered in 1979, this milestone is an impressive testament to history and Roman road construction along the Brenner route. A copy of the Mithras Stone can also be found in the courtyard.

6. Statue of Saint John of Nepomuk:

In front of the town hall in Sterzing stands a marble statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1739, erected as the patron saint against water hazards. It was intended to protect the town from the destructive floods of the Vallerbach stream, whose bed flowed strongly through Sterzing before it was regulated. The statue is also a testament to the “Italianization” of South Tyrol, as parts of the inscriptions were damaged by Italian fascists.

Not to be forgotten are the Rosskopf (local mountain of Sterzing), the Milchhof dairy farm, the Multscher Museum, and the Mining Museum in the Ridnauntal valley.

7. Dairy farm

The dairy farm in Sterzing is a real insider tip for all lovers of regional products. Here, you can not only experience the production process of fresh milk and other dairy products up close, but also taste the delicious products. Whether creamy cheese, fresh milk, or yogurt—the selection is diverse and will make the heart of every gourmet beat faster. It is particularly nice that the dairy farm often offers guided tours where you can learn more about sustainable agriculture and the importance of regional products.
