Route
On a day trip from Tyrol to Salzburg, we enjoy the ride over the “small German corner”. From Kirchberg i. T. we drive to Waidring, via Lofer/Salzburg border to Schneizelreuth/Germany, Bad Reichenhall and Piding, where we then cross the border back to Salzburg. A beautiful, eventful panoramic route with all kinds of historical and geological potential. We pass the historic Pass Strub near Lofer.
There, in the course of the Tyrolean peasant uprisings in 1809, under the leadership of Andreas Hofer, the Pass Strub was defended under two Tyrolean rifle companies. Initially, the pass could be defended very well and the Bavarian troops had to pay with extremely expensive losses, but ultimately the pass, which was only defended by Tyrolean riflemen, had to be handed over to Marshal Lefebvre by capitulation.
Today, the guardhouse, remains of the barrier systems and a memorial to the battles against the Bavarians and the French are still preserved.
Geological and historical highlights:
Millions of years ago, the Steinplatte in Waidring was a coral reef populated by prehistoric creatures. A prehistoric coral reef became an important transport hub for stagecoach travelers. Famous personalities such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Emperor Franz Josef stopped for a rest and visited the Gasthof Post inn in Waidring. At that time, the village was an important hub for many travelers as it was located on the Tyrolean Imperial Road.
Maria Plain: The Maria Plain pilgrimage church, located high up on a hill next to the city of Salzburg, is also well worth a visit. It offers a fantastic panoramic view of the historic city with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress, Gaisberg, Nockstein, and Untersberg.
Moni’s tip: Highly recommended for groups interested in churches and art history! Especially the miraculous image of Maria Plain.
